Tragedy struck New Orleans early on New Year’s Day when a vehicle drove into a crowd in the city’s vibrant tourist area, resulting in 10 fatalities and leaving 30 people injured. The horrifying event unfolded in the French Quarter, a hub for nightlife and celebrations, according to city officials.
Local disaster management agency Nola Ready described the event as a "mass casualty incident," highlighting that the vehicle plowed into a large gathering near Canal and Bourbon Street. Media outlets have reported that the driver, after causing the crash, fired a gun at the scene.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell referred to the situation as an act of terrorism and confirmed that investigations are underway. Police superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick further emphasized the deliberate nature of the act during a press conference, stating, “This individual’s intent was clear—he aimed to cause maximum harm and destruction.”
According to CBS News and CNN, eyewitnesses saw the driver open fire, prompting police officers to retaliate.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, FBI agent Alethea Duncan revealed the discovery of a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) at the scene. Authorities have urged residents to stay away from Bourbon Street and surrounding areas while the FBI spearheads the investigation.
Superintendent Kirkpatrick confirmed that two police officers had been shot and are currently in stable condition. Most of the injured are believed to be residents rather than tourists.
As dawn broke over the city, law enforcement agencies cordoned off sections of the French Quarter, focusing efforts on ensuring no additional threats existed. Residents nearby described waking up to "terrified screams" and chaotic scenes.
A witness, Kevin Garcia, recounted seeing a truck crashing into the crowd on Bourbon Street and hearing gunshots. "A body flew right in front of me," Garcia said, still visibly shaken.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry condemned the attack as a "heinous act of violence" in a statement on X, urging everyone to steer clear of the affected areas.
The incident occurred just hours before the Sugar Bowl, a major college football event scheduled in the city. With a parade preceding the game, New Orleans police had pledged full staffing for the festivities, but the tragedy casts a somber shadow over the celebrations.
